Handsworth United F.C
Club History
Wesleyan Youth (senior team) originally formed in June 1999 with an objective of providing young men from the inner city with the opportunity to train and play competitive football , this was managed by Richard Daley and supported by the Wesleyan Church situated on Holyhead Road Handsworth. Our first season (1999 / 2000) season saw us enter the Birmingham Amateur Football Association (AFA) and we were placed in Division 8 where we comfortably won the league and promotion after going unbeaten all season.
2000 /2001 Season - No longer supported by The Wesleyan Church the team thought a new name was needed and after much deliberation Handsworth United F.C was born, after being promoted we were placed in Division 4 and again won the league going unbeaten again. Richard Daley and other founder members contributed substantially to the development of the club. From this we were promoted to division 1 however we did not accept this place , but made an application to enter the Midland Combination Football League having received a glowing recommendation from the AFA.
2001/ 2002 Season - The first 2 years provided the young men with valuable experience and the required standards which were needed to play semi professional football. Handsworth United F.C played in division 3 of the Midland Combination for 2 seasons 2002 / 2003 and after much learning were promoted into Division 2. This also saw Mr Richard Daley resign from his position due to work and family commitments it was then Mr Reuben Tomlinson a team player took over the running of the club.
2003/2004 Season – The progression, the club continued to work hard winning promotion to Division 1
2004 / 2005 Season - With the squad setting their sights on the premier division and ever increasing financial constraints on the club we were unable to continue in the Midland combination Football league and sadly had to resign. This season also saw a change in focus and Handsworth United F.C started its very first Junior team Under 12s funded by Dojo’s Community project, the players were selected from trials held at Handsworth Park. This was a new era we entered the team into the Birmingham Boys and Girls Junior Football League. The Under 12s emulated the success we had with the senior team and in their first season the team came second in the league just missing a league title to Goal Difference (1). This was also the season Handsworth United the organisation was formed. After 3 seasons the Birmingham Boys and Girls Junior Football League folded and all teams moved to the Walsall junior Football League.
2008/ 2009 Season – With members drive and determination and a focus on club development the Handsworth United F.C Mini Soccer Academy was created providing coaching opportunities for children aged 5 – 10yrs . From this the Under 9s and U10s were born and this season also gave birth to our first ever U21s squad these teams played fixtures in the Bilston Partnership Youth Football League.
2009/2010 Season - Handsworth united f.c made massive strides during this season starting with up to 9 teams and also built up a bigger coaching team,we introduced the first team once again after a 4 year absence who went on to win the league in their first season competing,7 out of our 9 teams made it to at least the semi finals of their cup competitions which shows we are displaying good talent anfd coaching,This season was also the birth of our football play scheme which runs during the school holidays which we felt ran succesful for our first time and will also be looking to expand this in our new season. |
